life.”
“Are you saying…” Sadie swallowed, as if she weren’t sure if she could say the words out loud. “Are you saying that you’ve never been with a woman?”
“Yes,” Diesel replied, then turned his attention to the waiter who’d just approached their table.
Once they’d both ordered, Diesel turned his attention back to Sadie and saw that she was staring at him unblinking, a dazed expression on her face.
“Are you okay?” he asked, worried that she’d suddenly taken ill and they’d have to cut their date short.
Sadie’s mouth gaped for a moment, then snapped shut, before she said, “I don’t understand.”
Diesel ignored the waiter as he put down their drinks; instead, he reached across the table to cover the back of Sadie’s hand. He struggled not to focus on how soft and sweet her skin was. “Understand what?”
“How a man, a man like you…”
Diesel liked the way she looked at him. Like he was a large piece of well cooked meat, and she couldn’t wait to get a taste.
“Could still be… a virgin.” She whispered that last bit, leaning over the table to keep their privacy, and giving him a nice view of her supple breasts.
“I’m not interested in fooling around, or wasting my time with any woman who isn’t my mate,” he replied honestly. “I’m not a man who needs constant attention, or likes to be around people all that much.”
“Then why did you ask me out?” she asked, her lower lip pouting in quite an enticing manner.
Diesel was finding that he not only enjoyed the connection he felt with his intended, but that he liked watching her expressions and reactions. He knew she was worth being a man more often than a bear.
“Because I knew the moment I laid eyes on you that you were different. When I held you in my arms, and then when we touched, I felt the kind of connection that comes from pure natural instinct. You’re the woman I’ve been waiting for.”
Sadie gulped visibly, then looked around as if she were worried that someone in this crowded room were eavesdropping on their conversation. She leaned forward again, and Diesel took a moment to enjoy the view, before bringing his smiling face up to her flabbergasted one.
“You mean the one to…” Even in a whisper, her voice was higher than usual. “ Sleep with?”
“Oh yes,” Diesel replied, his grin turning wicked. “Although, I don’t plan to do much sleeping.”
Sadie sat back in her chair with a thump, pulling her hand from underneath his to fold it in her lap.
“That’s a lot of pressure. I mean, we’ve only just met… we’re on our first date… And you’re saying that I’m the one you’ve been waiting to lose your virginity to? I’m flattered and all, but, this is kind of a lot to throw at me, ya know?”
Diesel frowned and fretted that he’d said too much too soon. He should have listened to his brother and waited. He just couldn’t seem to find patience where Sadie was concerned. He knew she was his mate, and he didn’t want to wait. He found that he was eager to belong to her, and have her belong to him.
Realizing his mistake and that he needed to slow down before she ran away, Diesel waited until she brought her wary eyes back to him before saying, “Don’t worry, Sadie, there is no pressure. You asked me and I told you. I’ll always be honest and tell you what you want to know, but I don’t want you to think this all has to happen right now. Let’s forget about all of that for now and just enjoy our dinner. Okay?”
Sadie took a deep breath and replied, “Yes, okay. I’d like that.”
Diesel breathed a sigh of relief and asked, “So, why don’t you tell me what you do in Chicago.”
Sadie’s smile was grateful, and Diesel could hear her breathing regulate as she visibly relaxed in front of him.
“I’m an accountant,” she replied, before picking up her glass of white wine and taking a healthy sip. “I’ve worked for a small firm in the city for the last two
