you use your pecker for, you bound to be able to pee hard. Wait till he has him a woman. Sheâll take some of that steam out of him ân he wont be able to pee so hard.â
âHow do you know I ainât never had me no woman?â Tanner asked as he buttoned his pants.
ââCause iffân youâdâa had yourself a woman, you wouldnât be able to shut up about it. Thatâs all weâd be hearinâ,â Gillis said.
From the darkness, a calf started bawling.
âDamn, some little fellerâs wandered off from his mama,â Noble said. âGuess I better go getâ im back.â
âItâs time to go in now, ainât it?â Tanner asked. âI know they got breakfast ready and Iâm hungry.â
âYou was born hungry,â Noble said. âWeâll go in soon as I get back.â He clucked at his horse and rode toward the sound of the bawling calf, disappearing into the darkness.
âI ainât, you know,â Tanner said.
âYou ainât what?â Gillis asked.
âHad me no woman.â
Gillis chuckled. âHell, thereâs got to be a first time for everything. Just wait untilââ
Gillisâs comment was interrupted by a loud, bloodcurdling scream.
âWhat? What the hell was that?â Tanner asked.
âI donât know. It sounded like Noble. Noble? Noble, you all right?â Gillis shouted.
âGillis, Iâm scared,â Tanner said.
Gillis pulled his pistol and when he did, Tanner pulled his as well.
âNoble? Noble, are you out there?â
âWait a minute,â Tanner said suddenly. âAre you two trying to run a shuck on me?â He chuckled. âThatâs what youâre doinâ, isnât it? Trying to scare me?â
âTanner, I swear to God, I donât know what this is about,â Gillis said.
They heard the sound of a horse coming at a trot. Then the horse appeared from the darkness.
âThatâs Nobleâs horse, but where is he?â Gillis asked. Clucking at his own horse, he rode toward it, then suddenly stopped. âOh, my God!â he shouted, turning away. âOh, my God!â
âWhat is it?â Tanner asked. Then he saw what Gillis had seen. There, mounted on the saddle horn, was the disembodied head of Ned Noble.

âHarbin, I think you, Jenkins, and Kelly should ride out to relieve Noble and the others,â Ramon said back at the cow camp. âThey shouldâve been in by now.â
âYour wish is my command,â Harbin replied. Nodding at the other two men Ramon had selected, he said. âCome, my noble fellows, we few, we happy few, we band of brothers.â
âHarbin, where do you come up with all that shit?â
âThatâs from Shakespeareâs Henry the Fifth, â Harbin said as the three started toward the remuda. They had just cut out their mounts when a very large group of men burst out of the trees, firing.
Harbin went down with the opening fusillade.
âWhat the hell!â Barrett shouted.
The men swept through, firing as they galloped through the camp. One of them had a rope, and as he passed the chuck wagon, he threw a rope around a high stake, then pulled the wagon over. The cowboys were totally surprised by the attack, and many of them werenât even wearing guns. The few who were armed began firing back.
The attackers made two more passes through the camp, then rode out into the herd, shooting at the cattle as they rode by. The cattle began dropping.
âMy God, theyâre killing the cattle!â Carter shouted.
âWho the hell are these people?â Barrett asked. âWhere did they come from?â
âI donât know, but there sure as hell are a lot of them. Ramon, we need to get mounted! We need to get after them!â Carter said. âRamon?â
Looking over at Ramon, Carter saw the top hand leaning back against
