she just gave her some of her prized cap. She became worried. âUm, so, um, whatâs your roommate like?â
Carmen sat in the chair. âWhat roommate? She moved out when she found out I was gay. The bitch almost made me get ghetto with her, and she was ugly as sin, thinking I was gonna try to get her.â
âDamn! For real? Well, how about I move in with you so you donât have that problem again?â
âHell no, Cooley. So you can have some bitch trying to cut my shit up, thinking we fucking!â
âNo, itâs not like that. Plus, you can keep me out of trouble. I wonât even bring girls to the room, I promise. Come on, Carmen, it would be good for both of us. Help me grab my things so I can get upstairs and take a shower.â
Carmen thought about it. At least she knew she could trust Cooley. She agreed and helped her move her bags upstairs to her room.
âDamn, I bet Sara is gonna be mad that I moved out, huh?â
Cooley laughed at the thought of her roommate coming back from her shower and finding all her things gone. âYeah, get ready for the first dose of drama tonight at the party, and for the record her name is Cynthia, not Sara.â
Chapter 3
Lena was very impressed with her roommate. They got off to a great start. Lena had never met another black girl who had so much in common with music and movies.
âSo, tell me about your family?â Lena asked.
âWell, there isnât much to tell. My grandmother, Mema, raised me,â Denise said.
âReally? Where are your mom and dad?â
âMy momâs on drugs, and the rest of my family is screwed up. We donât get along too well.â
âOh, I am sorry to hear that.â Lenaâquickly wished she had never asked.
âItâs no problem. My grandmother is my heart. I go see her as much as I can. I know itâs gonna get hard, with the season starting and all, but nothing comes before her.â
âThat is so sweet, Denise. So, do you live and breathe basketball like Brandon?â
âI donât think so. I mean, I love it, but I am mainly using it to advance in school. There is talk of me going pro, but if it doesnât happen, I wonât be too messed up about it. Iâm just glad to have a talent that helped to get me in school. Iâm the first to go to college in my family, and I just want to make my Grandma proud,â Denise said. âSo what about your family?â
âUm, well, my mom and dad graduated from here; theyâre pretty well known. They donated a lot of money to the school.â
âWait, your last name is Jamerson, as in Karen Jamerson and Jamerson Hall?â
âGuilty, the dorm isââ
âYou got a damn dorm named after you! Thatâs pimpin. You live in your own dorm.â Denise laughed. âIâm tripping right now. Youâre a regular Whitley Gilbert.â
âWell, I guess. I donât really want too many people to know, if possible. I want people to like me for me.â
âYeah, I feel you on that, but it must be nice, coming from a good family,â Denise said. âSo, did you come here because of Brandon or âcause your folks are from here?â
âWell, I guess itâs a little bit of both. I wanted to be close to Brandon, but at the same time I really wanted to go somewhere with regular black people. I am so tired of being around stuck-up rich people who think they are better than everyone else. I wanted to see what it was like in the real world.â
âThe real world, huh?â Denise laughed. âGirl, by the end of this semester you gonna be begginâ for the better life again.â
They both laughed.
âI feel you, but it just gets hard, you know. I donât know who my real friends are from the ones who are only friends with me because of my money. Then most black girls treat me like shit because they think that I think Iâm all
