the announcer prepared to bring her on.
“Coming up next we have a beautiful young lady from right here in New York city. Please welcome Jamie!”
Her heart leapt into her throat, and Karen pushed her forward.
“Go! It’s your turn!”
Taking a deep breathe she stepped onto the stage. The lights were nearly blinding, and she walked as carefully as possible, praying her shaking legs wouldn’t cause her to wobble or even fall on the way out!
The crowd was full of the best dressed socialites, millionaire’s and charity workers. They clapped politely, and Jamie swallowed deeply as their eyes crawled over her.
“Having a good night so far, Jamie?” the announcer asked. His voice echoed through the beautiful theater, silencing the chit-chat at the tables below.
“It’s been lovely. Thank you so much for having me.”
“You’re very welcome! Now it says here that you’re from the city. What do you like to do for fun?”
“When I’m not working?” she asked, and to her surprise some of the crowd laughed.
Did they like her?
“I guess I like to go out with friends, have dinner. Go to the clubs, maybe visit the museums on the weekend.”
“Lovely.” The announcer said “And are you looking forward to your date?”
“I guess it depends on who bids.” She accidentally blurted, but another round of laughs rose up from the crowd.
“Well let’s see. Should we start the bidding at one thousand?” the announcer asked.
Jamie stared down at the crowd her heart in her throat. She scanned the tables, but no one raised a hand.
Oh god.
Was her nightmare coming to life? Would she have to leave the stage, the only girl that night who wasn’t bid on? How embarrassing would that be, why did she ever let Karen talk her into this?
“One thousand. Anyone?” the announcer said.
He let out an awkward pause, and the auditorium was quiet.
“Five hundred. Five hundred for a dinner with this absolutely lovely young lady.”
Nothing.
She blushed, and she was thankful that they couldn’t see through her dark, shining skin. She was about ready to jump out of her skin when a hand shot up.
“Five hundred, we have five hundred! One thousand. One thousand dollars for a date with this beautiful girl!”
Another hand shot up, and a wave of relief washed over her. She squinted to make out the bidder, and her heart dropped an inch as she realized he was old – his face round and unattractive before you considered the wrinkles.
Whatever she thought at least someone bid.
“Two thousand, do we have two thousand?” the announcer asked, and a skinny young man in front threw up his hand.
Better Jamie though, eyeing the thing man with a smile.
“Three thousand!” the old man shouted!
“Four!”
“Five!” the old man replied!
There was a long pause as the young man considered, and Jamie felt another wave of disappointment as his hand didn’t come back up.
“Going once!” the announcer said.
Five thousand is plenty good.
“Going twice!” he said.
“Twenty thousand!” someone shouted.
Her eyes went wide.
“Twenty thousand, to an anonymous buyer!” the announcer said, slamming his gavel.
Twenty thousand?
She was escorted backstage in an absolute daze, and when she pulled back the curtain she saw Karen eyes wide, mouth open!
“Oh my god, I can’t believe it!” she said, screaming and waving her arms.
Jamie was flabbergasted. She couldn’t find the words.
“I told you, you would do great! Now it’s time for the after party!”
Chapter Three
Jamie slept in the next day. The hangover from the night before was an absolute bitch, and by the time she had pulled herself out of bed and had a glass of orange juice and handful of Tylenol it was nearly 2 o’clock.
She looked at the white dress thrown over the side
