youâre missing?â Dee Dee asked.
There was Dunkumâs old radio on the dresser.
âWhatâs it doing here?â asked Stacy.
Dee Dee explained. âI traded some of my stuff with the boys.â
Stacy couldnât believe her ears.
âHow can we make any money that way?â she demanded.
âOh, thereâs plenty of money,â Dee Dee said.
âThere is?â Stacy said, surprised.
âSure! Your granny paid bunches of money. She bought that smelly old cologne. Your grandpaâs pajama top, too,â said Dee Dee.
âFor how much?â Stacy asked.
âTwenty bucks,â answered Dee Dee.
âTwenty? Thatâs way too much,â said Stacy.
âI know, but she wouldnât listen,â Dee Dee said.
Stacy couldnât believe her ears.
âYour granny wanted to make some nice kids happy,â Dee Dee explained. âThatâs just what she said.â
âNobody told me about this,â Stacy said.
Dee Dee shook her head. âI guess you were busy makinâ lemonade.â
Stacy thought about everything. âSo, weâll buy the flags with Grannyâs money?â
Dee Dee grinned. âYep.â
âWow,â Stacy said.
âReal cool,â Dee Dee added.
âWell, thereâs only one other problem now,â Stacy said.
Dee Dee looked up at her. âThe beanbag angel?â she asked.
Stacy nodded. âI need to get it back. What can I do?â
âI have an idea,â Dee Dee said. And she whispered in Stacyâs ear.
Stacy listened carefully.
Then she said, âYouâre right. Thanks for a great idea!â
And up the street she ranâto see Eric about the angel.
When Stacy found Eric, he was playing with his hamster. A teeny-tiny cat collar was on Fran the Hamâs neck.
âNice trade,â Stacy said. She meant the cat collar.
Eric looked up. âOh, you heard?â
She nodded. âYou traded your treasures. Wanna trade something with me?â she asked.
âWhatcha got?â he said.
âA whole sale table full,â she replied.
Eric smiled a strange little smile. âReally? Youâd give me everything on the table?â
Stacy nodded. âOnly if you give back my beanie angel.â
Eric rubbed his head. âYou must really want it,â he said.
âSure do,â she said.
âWhatâs so special about it?â he asked.
She took a deep breath. âAbby gave it to me a long time ago.â
Ericâs eyes nearly popped out. âAbby gave it to you?â
âThatâs why,â she said softly.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â Eric said.
âI shouldâve,â Stacy replied. âIâm sorry.â
Eric grinned at her. âThis is our secret, OK?â
âThanks,â Stacy said.
âAnd you can forget about trading the sale stuff,â he said. âI donât want it.â
Stacy smiled. âYouâre a cheerful giver.â
âHere, hold my hamster.â Eric ran inside to get the angel.
Stacy held Fran the Ham carefully.
At that moment, Abby and her family rode up the cul-de-sac. The Hunter family waved to her.
Stacy called to them, âWelcome home!â
Abby leaned out the van window. âDid I miss anything?â she asked.
âYou just wait,â Stacy said, grinning.
Abby smiled back. âDouble dabble good,â she said. Then she picked up two suitcases and ran to her house.
Fran the Ham made twittering sounds in Stacyâs hand. Nothing special. Justcute little hamster noises.
Stacy leaned over and whispered in the teeny-weeny ear. âFlag Dayâs gonna be super. Thanks to a super-duper Granny.â
She thought for a second. âThanks to Eric, too.â
Stacy felt great. Even if she had to say so herself.
