proximity. For the next couple of hours, I’m the closest thing to Brick. My stomach sinks at the reminder this moment of happiness is short-lived.
“What’s wrong? You’re suddenly so tense, pup,” Brick says behind me.
He runs a hand up my spine, making me shiver. Then he does the unexpected, and begins massaging the knotted muscle on my shoulders.
“That feels so good,” I murmur.
“Tell me what you were thinking about.”
I don’t know how Brick does it. How he maintains a commanding, but comforting tone at the same time. At a drop of a hat, Brick can get anyone to talk without much violence.
Lying won’t work with Brick. Since I have nothing to lose, I tell him the truth. “I’m just thinking...how this is going to end soon. Don’t get me wrong. You’ve been nothing but wonderful, but once the night ends, everything goes back to normal.”
I close my eyes and breathe in Brick’s scent. It feels right, letting the truth out.
Brick growls and all the hairs on my back stand up at the sound. “That what you think, pup? Now you’ve had your fill, and it’s over? You’re such a greedy little thing aren’t you?”
I open my eyes, breathing hard. Brick sounds mad, although I can’t comprehend why. A second later I feel the slight edge of his canines, dragging along the edge of my earlobe. I gulp when Brick drags them down the side of my neck. Brick shows off his perfect control. His teeth barely graze my skin, careful not to draw blood. At the same time, he’s letting me know he’s holding me captive. That he’s the one doing the driving.
I swallow, and realize I misinterpret the situation when Brick grinds himself behind me. I feel his shaft, already at half-mast, My own cock perks up, eager for more, like Brick.
“See how hard you instantly make me, Bobby?”
Brick noses his way down my neck, seemingly fixated on that spot. The spot where he can place his mark and tell the world I’m his. Oh God . Let this not be a dream. Brick couldn’t be that cruel. He wouldn’t dangle that tiny piece of hope, would he?
“I don’t understand,” I whisper, turning so I can face him.
Brick tips my chin up, forcing me to look at him. Those aren’t the eyes of a liar. We may have indulged in one mind-blowing round of sex, but those few moments tell me a million truths. They show me the man behind the mask of the alpha. The real Brick. Firm, but tender. Dominant, but patient. My Brick, except Brick isn’t mine to keep. Brick belongs to the pack, takes care of it, but who will take care of Brick?
“What’s going on in that busy little head of yours?” Brick asks.
“You protect the pack, but who’s going to take care of you?” I dare whisper.
“You up for the job?” Brick sounds amused.
“Yeah. I mean I’m not proposing or anything serious like that. After today, is there a possibility of a date number two?” My heart’s beating so hard I’m sure Brick can hear its thundering staccato rhythm.
“I don’t fucking do dates.” My face falls at his words, except Brick catches my chin and shows me the determined look in his eyes. “But after this, you think I’m just going to let you go, Bobby?”
“So you’re going to make an exception?” I hopefully ask.
Brick’s lips twitch, then he takes my lips again. He kisses me slower this time, more gentle. Brick takes his time, and I can’t remember the last time anyone simply kissed me like this. I’m hoping the gesture changes his mind. Brick’s gaze burns with dark amber fire.
“Yeah, Bobby Roy. For you, I’ll make an exception. Let’s take a crack at this, and see where it leads.”

Chapter Three
“G ood morning,” Brick murmurs against me. “Thinking deep thoughts?”
“Well,” I falter, letting out a squeak when Brick wraps his arms around me tighter. There’s a reason everyone calls our alpha Brick. He’s massive, and every inch of him is built like a wall—impenetrable, like the armor around his heart. Until I
