between me and my car.
“Damn car won’t start,” I say, as I pull my phone out to call a tow truck.
“Pop the hood, let me take a look at it,” he says, as he walks to the hood of the car. I slide in and pull the lever, he reaches in tugging on the latch and lifting the hood and resting it on the metal holder thingy that lies flush under the hood. Ya know, that kick stand looking thing? Yeah, I know nothing about cars.
He fiddles for a bit and then calls out around the hood, “Turn her over.” And I turn the key, but nothing. The groaning and sputtering from before now gone, just a quiet clicking sound.
“Looks like it’s either the battery or the alternator. I’ve got cables in my car, I’ll pull it over,” he says as he wipes his hands on his jeans and fishes his keys out of his pocket. “Stay here, I’ll be right back,” he says as he walks away, like I’m really going somewhere.
A few seconds later a black Crown Vic pulls around the corner and stops hood to hood against my car, a thunk coming from the inside and he gets out pulling up his hood. “Still undercover?” I ask him.
“Yeah, but not as undercover as I was,” he smirks.
“Well, that car has COP written all over it, so if you’re trying to be inconspicuous, it ain’t working,” I tell him, while snickering just a bit. He turns back to the car, “Yep. You’re right.” And he flashes his pearly whites.
He clicks his key fob and the trunk pops open . He strides over pulling out a set of jumper cables. He hooks them on to both cars and motions for me to try and start the car. Turning the key, we hear nothing again. I try several more times before I give up. “Looks like it’s your alternator. I know a good shop if you need one, and I can get dispatch to send a tow truck over here.”
“Thanks Chase that would be nice. Can the tow truck driver take me home?”
    “No, but I will.”
“Oh, I don’t want you going out of your way, Chase. I can call a cab.”
“It’s no problem Ally, I can take you home. Where do you want your car towed to?” He asks, as I crawl in to remove my belongings. I grab a tote bag from the back seat and stuff everything in it, CD’s, my GPS and miscellaneous items.
I don’t answer right away, “You got a screwdriver?” I ask him. He raises his eyebrows at me, but reaches back in to his trunk to hand me one. I skip to the back of the car and proceed to take the license plate off of the back, stuffing it in to my tote bag. “What are you doing?”
“I’m not having this puppy towed without keeping my tag, Chase.”
“But....” He pauses, a confused look on his face. “Ummm...” He stutters.
“Have them take it to the tow yard, I’m done with this piece of shit,” I say, as I kick the tire one last time for good measure.
“The tow yard? Why?” He asked.
“Cause it’s a piece of shit and it’s time for it to go to the graveyard. Can you drop me by the Nissan dealer on the way to my apartment? It’s just a few miles down the road,” I smile back at him.
“You’re going to buy a new car? Just like that?”
“Yep, I got that promotion on Monday, so it’s time. I’ve waited for this for so long, just hoping Roberta would make it until then. Her timing is impeccable.”
“Congratulations, Ally,” h e says, as he pulls me in to a hug. “So proud of you, that’s awesome. Just goes to show you hard work does make a difference, huh?” I nod in agreement, a cheesy smile spreads across my face. I had planned to wait until the weekend to take this plunge, but now is as good a time as ever.
“Roberta?” He asks, but I just nod, pointing at the broken down piece of shit.
“Ahhh, I see. Well come on let’s go. I’ll call dispatch from the car. You sure you don’t want to trade it in?”
“Really? How much do you think I’ll get for a ten year old beater with a blown alternator?”
    “Right. Point taken, let’s go.”
As we traveled up the interstate, my phone
