I take my grandmother to her appointmentsââ
âWho said you have to sit at home?â An intent stare.
Ria didnât react well to any kind of intimidation. âWell, if I canât go anywhere aloneâand Iâm not going to put my grandmother in dangerâthen what else am I supposed to do, hire a bodyguard?â The minute, the
second
, her father found out about this, heâd use it as an excuse to stop her from finding a job.
Simon and Alex Wembley loved their only daughter. They loved her so much, they couldnât bear to have the world put a single bruise on her soul. As a result, Ria had grown up being protected and cosseted. If it hadnât been for her grandmother, she might have turned into a spoiled brat. Instead, sheâd grown up cherishing her parentsâ love . . . while understanding the sadness that lay behind its protective fervor. Thatâs why she hadnât gone away to college like Kenâshe hadnât been able to put that much worry in their hearts. But she couldnât live in a cocoon forever, not even for her mom and dad. It would never suit herâit would, in fact, destroy her.
However, her parents hadnât yet figured that out. In Simonâs and Alexâs minds, marriage to Tom would provide the ultimate protectionâas a Clark wife, sheâd be expected to do nothing more strenuous than look pretty and maybe arrange a few flowers. âEmmett?â she prompted when he remained silent.
âIâll protect you.â
Her heart thudded. âHow long?â
âAs long as it takes.â
She almost took a step back at the sheer untamed power of him. âYou canât be with me twenty-four/seven. I wonât say no to an escort from the skytrain at night, though.â She was independent, not stupid.
âThe Crewâs been known to kidnap people off the street in broad daylight.â His skin pulled taut over his cheekbones. âThey intimidate any witnesses into silence, so their victims seem to disappear into thin air.â
The need for freedom came up against the logic of what he was saying. âWhat about my family?â
âWeâve already posted pack soldiers at your motherâs store and around your home. The Crewâs M.O. is to hit the women in the family, so your mother, sister-in-law, and grandmother are most at risk.â
âAmberâs over eight months pregnant,â Ria began.
âReally?â A teasing smile. âI thought she looked a bit different.â
She felt a flush stain her cheekbones. âShe hasnât been going out much anywayâif we tell her about the Crewâs tactics, sheâll probably be okay with staying inside for a bit.â
âIt would definitely make our job easier. Your mother?â
âNo way. Sheâll go to workâshe refuses to surrender to intimidation.â
âI canât say thatâs exactly a surprise.â He shook his head. âIâm not even going to ask about your grandmother. Just make sure she knows someone will be shadowing her every time she goes out alone.â
âKnowing her, sheâll get them to carry her shopping.â
Emmettâs eyes gleamed. âAnd you?â
âIâll be ignoring you,â she said, feeling an odd sense of excitement in her gut.
No smile, no hint of softening in his face. âYouâre welcome to try.â

E mmett finished fixing the computronics inside his motherâs car and picked up his cell phone to call her. âIâll drop it off tomorrow morning. It was a short circuit, nothing big.â
âThanks, baby.â His mom was the only one Emmett let get away with calling him âbaby.â The one time heâd tried to question her about it, sheâd simply stared at him until heâd sighed and given in.
âHas Dad gotten in yet?â
âNo,â she told him, her voice holding
