him doubled over. Nicholas had always teased her about what he referred to as her southern innocence, cracking inappropriate jokes every chance he got. She wasn’t naïve nor was she inexperienced, but she did tend to shy away from any sexual banter, whether meant as a joke or not.

“Remind me to kick you when you’ve fallen asleep.”

“Here you go,” she said brightly, handing him a cup of coffee. “Still haven’t been getting much sleep?”

Nicholas shook his head before taking a huge gulp of the dark liquid, welcoming its warmth as it travelled down his throat. “I guess I’m just one of those people who don’t sleep so well unless it’s in their own bed.”

It was a lie, and a lame one at that, but she had seemed to accept it, turning her attention back to the speaker.

Truth be told, he hadn’t been able to get any decent amount of sleep due to their sleeping arrangement. She didn’t kick like she said she did, she didn’t talk in her sleep, she didn’t even snore. No, what she did was much worse.

That first night, after coming back from the welcome dinner, Carissa had decided to head to bed early while he sat at the desk checking his email and making last minute preparations for the next day. When he finally decided to call it a night, she was fast asleep curled up on her side and her back turned from him. But once he settled under the covers, she instinctively rolled towards his warmth, pressing herself against his side. He lay frozen as she nuzzled her head into the crook of his neck, holding in a breath until she finally stopped moving.

His first thought was to push her away and keep as much distance between them as possible. But the feel of her warm breath against his neck, her arm draped across his chest and her soft curves pressed against his side got him thinking that there were worse ways to spend the night.

He turned his head to look at her, admiring the peaceful expression that one can only get while asleep. There was a hint of a smile on her face, making him wonder what it was that she was dreaming about. He thought that maybe it was about sightseeing around New York, like she had talked to him about during dinner.

His thoughts drifted back to the event just hours earlier, more so to how she looked. Wrapped in a figure-hugging emerald green dress, with her hair pulled up in a sleek up-do, she looked more like one of the stars of the many Broadway shows rather than a small town girl from Texas.

He wasn’t the only one who appreciated how she had looked, noticing stares sent her way the second she stepped into the room. Feeling somewhat protective, he kept close to her, sometimes even draping an arm over her shoulders to fend off any men who looked to be advancing in on her. She sent curious glances his way every time he did it, completely oblivious to the looks she was getting. Several times they had been asked if they were a couple, both replying that they were friends at best; and colleagues first and foremost.

But right now, with her curled up against him, he thought that the idea of them being more than that wasn’t so bad at all. If anything, seeing her in that dress and having her this close now had him thinking just what she kept hidden under those clothes.

He stifled a groan at the direction his thoughts were headed, thinking that he definitely didn’t need to be imagining her naked especially when they had to share a bed for a whole week. And if this was how she slept, he surely couldn’t afford to be caught with a hard on around her.

Sure enough, that was how she slept each night. No matter whether they had fallen asleep turned away from each other, Nicholas would find himself waking up in the middle of the night feeling her pressed against him. He was only glad that she was a deep sleeper and left unaware of how she keeps cuddling with him.  He could have pushed her away, he should have, but there was a part
